Fistula: What is it?

Anal fistulas are tracts lined with diseased tissue that harbor a persistent infection. The tract opens on the skin at one end, and it is connected to the anal canal on the other. A tiny bulge or opening in the perianal area is how this issue initially manifests itself. There may occasionally be some pain along with an increase in edema. But as soon as this swelling ruptures, the pain subsides and pus and blood are released. However, this pattern is continually perpetuated.

What symptoms accompany a fistula?

Pus, blood, or watery discharges from the anus or through a nodule that is slightly uncomfortable and located in the perianal region are the most typical signs of a fistula. There may not be any symptoms in the inactive version, but all of the previously listed symptoms may be present when the condition is active.

How does it happen?

It is caused by a persistent infection in either the internal gland of the anus or the anal wall. The protracted infection combined with ongoing inflammation could be the cause. Nonetheless, it is frequently observed that an anal fistula can result from a persistent fissure. Similar to this, if the abscess is cut and drained, perianal abscess may result in anal fistula. Not every perianal abscess has to develop into an anal fistula. A perianal abscess may not always be present when an anal fistula is observed.

How is the condition identified?

Anal fistulas are clinically identified based on their normal presentation; nevertheless, M.R.I. fistulograms, ultrasonography, or clinical probing are the appropriate methods for evaluating anal fistulas with regard to their depth, direction, and branching pattern.

What Can Cause a Fistula in the Anals?

  • As a result of anal fissure infection.
  • Because of the trauma caused by passing hard stools, anal fistulas may form as a result of subsequent infection.
  • Anal fistulas are frequently developed as a result of conditions such ulcerative colitis, Chrohn's disease, diabetes, etc.
