What is Panchakarma?

Panchakarma is derived from Sanskrit word meaning five actions and involves a complex of treatments oriented to the healing yoga medical program of detoxification including elimination of toxic substances, restoration of organ systems, dosha balance Vata Pitta Kapha and whole system rejuvenation. The cleansing of the body is so profound, that, as a side effect of Panchakarma, the body’s self-healing capabilities are activated, and the internal order of the organism is restored back with improved levels of immunity and clarity of mind.

Our Panchakarma treatments are formulated and provided by experienced practitioners at Navyam Ayurveda, thus ensuring purposeful detox, which is safe, caring and most importantly effective.

The Five Core Therapies of Panchakarma

Panchakarma includes 5 procedures, and each of them aims to detoxify and balance the body in a different way:

  • Vamana (Therapeutic Emesis): Vamana therapy is performed in order to eliminate excess Kapha by means of forced vomiting. It is a very helpful method for the patients suffering from respiratory problems, or who have a cough with excessive sputum. Vamana cleans the upper part of the digestive tract and improves the functioning of the respiratory system which brings a feeling of weightlessness.
  • Virechana (Purgation Therapy): Virechana uses herbal laxatives to purge the liver and intestines of toxins and excess Pitta Dosha. It also helps to relieve one’s bowels, cleanse the digestive tract and skin, and rectify metabolism. Agni is also enhanced with Virechana and it helps in achieving mental clarity.
  • Basti (Herbal Enema Therapy): Basti is deemed one of the best complications for the eradication of toxins that are deep rooted, more so in the case of Vata dosha. This procedure consists of introducing liquefied herbal preparations (decoctions or oils) into the bowel irrigation. Basti therapy relieves pain in the joints, tonifies the body and the digestive system, and cures certain types of digestion and nerve problems.
  • Nasya (Nasal Administration of Medications): Nasya Chikitsa is a treatment in Ayurveda that involves cleansing and rejuvenating especially the nasal cavity, nasal sinuses and the respiratory system. Different herbal powders or oil are instilled in the nose that helps in breathing, relieving the sinuses and helping in clarity of thought. Nasya is useful in treating various wellness concerns such as sinus infection, headache or migraine troubles and headaches that have become chronic over a period of time.
  • Raktamokshana (Bloodletting Therapy): Raktamokshana is a specialized bloodletting therapy in Ayurved. Raktamokshana is prescribed to patients in order to detoxify the body and purify the blood. Such therapies are beneficial in skin diseases, high blood pressure and such other gouty conditions. At Navyam Ayurveda, Raktamokshana procedure is administered in the right way to ensure there is unison of blood distribution and purification enhancing an even skin tone.

The Panchakarma Process at Navyam Ayurveda

Because of the care in designing the Panchakarma detox programs, it is assured that every client will undergo the required cleansing, balancing and rejuvenation. The process is divided into three phases as follows:

  • Purva Karma (Preparation): The preparatory phase comprises Snehana (oleation) and Swedana (sudation). Snehana is the phase where various oils are used, sticks are dipped in oils and with the help of these sticks oil is applied inside the body for detoxification purpose and external application is made in the body by using an oil massage. This is followed by Swar Dron treatment which consists of steam treatment wherein the channels are opened and the toxins are made ready for removal from the body.
  • Pradhana Karma (Main Detoxification): This is the crux stage, where one or more of the five Panchakarma types of therapies are used depending on the body constitution and health requirements of the individual. Each therapy addresses certain toxins and certain areas of imbalance in the body encouraging effective cleansing.
  • Paschat Karma (Post-Therapy Care): Post- detoxification therapy is highly significant in helping the body to adapt to a new clean and balanced state. This phase consists of some restrictive diets, herb supplements as well as modification of the way of life in order to maintain and improve the convalescent status gained after the period of the Panchakarma therapy.
